Notre Dame & Musée d'Orsay: from Gargoyles to Impressionism

Spend a leisurely day visiting two of Paris’ most beautiful sites - the world’s greatest collection of Impressionist art at the spectacular Musée d’Orsay, and the iconic Cathedral of Notre Dame, symbol of Paris and home to the legendary hunchback! Get up close to the swirling colors of world-famous paintings by artists such as Monet and Van Gogh, wander along the gorgeous Seine River and perhaps lunch in the Latin Quarter, then climb the iconic bell towers of Notre Dame for some of the best views over the city, in the company of course of the famous gargoyles!

The gorgeous Musée d’Orsay is home to a stunning array of world-famous Impressionist masterpieces. Considered the favourite museum of both Parisians and visitors alike, this spectacular museum should not be missed! Bypass the often long entry lines and gaze at iconic paintings such as Monet’s Water Lilies or Toulouse Lautrec’s Starry Night over the Rhone. See masterpieces by Manet, Renoir, Cézanne and Rodin, learn about the painters’ colorful lives, and how the works you are looking at today radically transformed the course of art.  As their world changed around them, these artists’ progressive approach to life and art, their new techniques, expressive brushstrokes and vivid colors caused a scandal. Your expert guide will lead you to the highlights of this beautiful museum, and bring to life both the iconic artworks and the renowned painters who created them.

We break for lunch after your tour, and you may like to stroll along the UNESCO listed banks of the Seine River - it’s just a short walk to the Ile de la Cité, home of Notre Dame Cathedral. On your way you can admire the famous ‘bouquinistes’ - the antique booksellers along the riverside - stop for lunch in the Latin Quarter, or visit the legendary Shakespeare & Company bookstore, your guide will be happy to provide tips and suggestions.

After lunch, follow in the footsteps of Victor Hugo’s famous hunchback, Quasimodo, the bell-ringer of Notre Dame, and climb the 422 steps to the top of the bell towers. Enjoy an up close view of the amazing gargoyles and chimera and see the belfry, home to  the 13 ton bell Emmanuel. You will also benefit from some of the best views extending right out over Paris. Your guide will point out the major site and monuments, and offer you tips on the best ways to visit them during your stay.

Your guide will then accompany you into the church and guide you around the interior, pointing out the dazzling rose windows - some of the largest in Europe - and the relics of Christ’s crown of thorns. The construction of the cathedral started in 1163, and lasted over 170 years. Upon exiting Notre Dame you’ll have a chance to admire the grandiose exterior and hear the stories and legends of the many personalities bound up in the fame of the cathedral.
