Probably the Parisian’s favorite neighborhood, the Marais is both very young and trendy as well as traditional and full of historical buildings. Paris was torn down in the 1860’s under Napoleon III who was determined to modernize and enlarge the streets of his capital. Entire medieval or Renaissance districts were destroyed and replaced by the typical and famous “Haussmannian-style” buildings we know today. The inhabitants of le Marais stood up against Haussmann’s pickaxe and protected their neighborhood to our delight today.
