Book a private VIP tour of Versailles for you and your small group and enjoy the experience of going behind closed doors in the private apartments of the kings. Not only will you tour the State Apartments accessible to the general public, with the unmissable Hall of Mirrors, but your guide will take you into private rooms where only the kings’ closest friends would be allowed. These are smaller, less pompous rooms, allowing you to see and understand the two different faces of the Palace. You will also have the chance to visit the magnificent Opera or the royal chapel, both normally closed to the general public, as well as a fully guided tour of the spectacular gardens.
Seeing the State Apartments of Versailles is an amazing experience that has been shared by millions of visitors since the palace was built. These rooms have always been open to the public, and Louis XIV’s life was never private.
During this tour you will of course see these apartments and witness their greatness. They were intended to amaze you and were the perfect means for the king to show his power. But you are still in the public space. Did you know that ianyone was welcome to enter so long as they were wearing a hat and a sword? As a result, the king had no private life and was constantly being watched. As beautiful and amazing as his palace may be, you would probably agree that it was a burden to not be alone even when going… to the bathroom !
Later, in the XVIIIth century, Louis XIV’s heirs, who didn’t want to be constantly watched, built private rooms (and bathrooms!) to escape the weight of representation. No one was allowed there but a few close friends the mistresses of the king. Today, those apartments are not open to the general public, but our licensed guide can take you and your small group there. Witness the backstage life of the palace which was lived out in a less pompous but still very refined style. Appreciate the privilege of not being in a crowded space just as if you had been invited by the king. Our guides have obtained a special authorisation to lead tours in this private space (Versailles will always be Versailles and privileged access must be earned!) You will see the private bedroom of the king where he would sneak in after courtiers had left his parade room for the ceremony of His Majesty’s going to bed, and sneak out in the morning for the ceremony of the getting up ! The burden was still heavy.
Discover precious pieces of furniture that escaped the auctions of the revolutionary period. Louis XV’s incredible clock designed by Passement, an engineer who could probably teach things to our engineers today! Imagine that he found a way for the clock to show you the actual positions of the planets of the solar system. Without ever having been fixed, the clock still tells you today’s date and takes into account leap years after over 2 centuries… So much for our smartphones !
You will see the first ever roll top desk made to conceal the king’s private documents. Also in one of the most beautifully adorned small rooms of the palace, you can close your eyes for a second and try to listen to Mozart playing the harpsichord as he did for the Royal family there.
During this tour, you will also have the privilege to go inside the Royal Chapel or the Opera House that the general public can only see from afar. You will definitely feel the difference between the intimacy of the king’s private rooms and the thirst for “grandeur” and impressive adornments desired by the Sun King.
Finally, discover the French-Style gardens built for Louis XIV. Illustration of his domination over nature and the country, your guide will take you on a stroll through the beautiful groves, considered as extra rooms used by the kings during sunny days.
