Get the full experience of Versailles with this amazing tour. So many visitors go to the palace and don’t know they’re missing a whole different perspective of it. Indeed, with its 2000 acres domain, Versailles has more to offer than the Palace and its XVIIth century gardens.
Join us on this tour which will reveal the other side, more intimate, that is the best way to understand the private lives of the Royals.
Your day will begin with the must-sees, so that you get the general idea of court life. The huge State Apartments, the Chapel, the Hall of Mirrors and the official bedroom of the king. Our Memories guide will give you all the details of the daily life of the thousands of courtiers who lived there and of the Royals who had to exhibit their lives in front of everybody.
Then you’ll stroll in the one-of-a-kind French-style gardens built by king Louis XIV to illustrate his glory and domination over his country. The grand perspective with its grand canal is not the only things there are to see. You will be taken to the best groves and, on Fountain show days, see the amazing waterworks run for you as though you were at one of Louis’ parties.
Once you’ve reached the bottom of the French-style gardens, it will be time for a lunch break. What better sight than the canal and the Palace above to choose among the two different restaurants or just a sandwich or salad that you can eat at a table or on the grass, if you feel like it, like Marie Antoinette enjoyed doing regardless of the conventions of Etiquette.
Now is the time to discover the other side of Versailles. Our guide will take you to the Trianon, which once was a village transformed into a private palace by Louis XIV. Later, Louis XV built another mansion named Petit Trianon for his life with his mistress. Louis XVI chose to give it to his wife Marie Antoinette. She spent there the best moments of her life surrounded by the people of her choosing. If you want to understand the mind of this unusual and modern queen, this place will reveal it to you thanks to all the insight details given by our Memories’ licensed guides who have studied all about this period. Learn how, through her innocent games in Trianon, Marie Antoinette built herself the worst reputation ever. By the end of the tour you will have all the elements to make up your mind about her. Sure, she never said “let them eat cake,” but did she do all that what was expected of a queen? Is she a victim of misogynist behaviors or was she too much of a “air-head” as her brother called her ?
You will judge by the refinement and simplicity of her Petit Trianon that she had a complex personality that led her to be called the “sheperdess queen”. Indeed, in her English-Style garden, our guide will show you the theatre she built and where she also performed even if it was inappropriate for a queen to do so. You will finish this tour in the Hamlet, the last buildings she commissioned, which consists of a series of cottages meant to recreate a fake village and a farm that became a playground for the whole group of friends, away from the turmoil of Paris, craving for a change in the system.
