What to expect during this tour ?

“My dear friend, your train station looks like a Palace of Fine Arts while our Palace of Fine Arts looks like a train station”. This is what the architect Victor Laloux heard when his Orsay train station was inaugurated for the World Fair in 1900. People said it was a cathedral of modern times. Closed in 1939 for being obsolete, it was due to be demolished and replaced with a more modern building. Fortunately, in the 1970’s it was decided to turn it into a museum dedicated to the second half of the XIXth century, or more precisely art from 1848 until 1914. A wonderful choice indeed, as this period sees a pictural revolution as official academic art struggles to survive against the rise of an unconventional and daring new movement : the Impressionists. The building itself is a symbol of that duality. It does look like a palace but its metal structure was very modern.

The Musée d'Orsay is now the Parisian’s favourite museum. Join our expert guide and witness the whirling, colorful revolution of the Impressionist movement. Manet first challenged the academy who ruled over art with an iron fist. Then, tens of artists followed his path. Monet, Renoir, Degas, Caillebotte, Berthe Morisot, Toulouse Lautrec, followed by foreigners fascinated by this movement such the Americans James Abbott, Whistler…

The development of science bringing new inventions such cameras, trains, electricity and cars disrupted the perception of the world. Swirling movement, vibrant colors or new subjects came to the forefront in art, transforming it forever as the world around it transformed.

End your journey in the XIXth century with the famous painters who took over after the Impressionists : Van Gogh and Gauguin. And if you’d like to see more after that, feel free to spend the rest of the day in the museum at your leisure.
