Tour Description

King Louis XVI gave a key encrusted with diamonds to his beloved wife Marie Antoinette. This key opened the doors to a secret world, far removed from the public life at the palace that she so hated, and accessible to only a very few. The small palace of the Petit Trianon was her private world and the place where she was happiest. Let your guide take you on a journey in her footsteps, through the beautiful English style gardens that she created, into the elegant, intimate and charming rooms of her home, furnished today as they were then. You will also see her tiny theatre, built specially for her so she could perform on stage, to small audiences made up of a few friends and servants! This stunning theatre is often called the hidden jewel of Versailles.

At Trianon Marie Antoinette could live a simple, country life. Here you will also discover the last thing she had commissioned, a perfect replica of a Normandy village, complete with thatched cottages and vegetable gardens where, far from the elaborate life and rituals of the palace, she would play at being a shepherdess surrounded by farm animals.

No visit to Versailles is complete without seeing the hidden beauty of the Petit Trianon

FAQ

Where will I meet my guide?

You will meet your guide in Versailles. The meeting point is outside the restaurant Ore, which is in the courtyard of the palace. Pass the security gate and head to the left towards entrance A (the left wing of the palace facing you). You will see a sign indicating the restaurant, your guide will be wearing their guide card on an orange lanyard.

How do I get to Versailles?

It’s very simple to get to Versailes. Take the RER C train from stations in central Paris. Make sure you take the train to Versailles Chateau. Once you arrive in Versailles it’s a short walk to the Palace, just follow the signs and the crowds! You can also take a taxi and they usually drop you right in front of the courtyard. Then it’s just a short walk to the meeting point.

Is the Domain of Marie-Antoinette far from the palace?

The Domain of Marie-Antoinette is at the end of the gardens of Versailles, it is not an area that is visited on standard visits to the palace. For your comfort, we will take the ‘Petit Train’ which leaves from just behind the palace and takes us to the entrance of the Petit Trianon (Marie-Antoinette’s private mansion and the entrance to her domain). We will also take the train back to the palace.

How is this visit different from the visit to the palace?

This is a very different visit, and gives you a much better understanding of Marie-Antoinette’s life at Versailles. Her mansion is much smaller, it is still fully furnished. The gardens are a very different style to the formal gardens, and the whole area is much less crowded.

Is there a lot of walking?

There is a reasonable amount of walking outside, we will visit her gardens and walk through them to her village and farm. It is an easy walk, but can get muddy if it has rained a lot so please wear comfortable shoes.

Will we visit inside?

We will visit inside the Petit Trianon, her private mansion. The houses in her village are not open and are viewed from outside.

Will we see her private theater?

We will see the theater. However it is small and very fragile so it’s not open to
the general public. There is a glass door which we can view through, which gives us good views of the inside. Very rarely, the theater is completely closed without warning.

Where will the tour end?

Your guide will escort you back to the palace on the train and drop you there.

Can I do this tour straight after a morning tour of the palace?

Yes! We have timed this tour so that you have time for a lunch break after your morning tour and then can pick up the tour in the afternoon. We recommend you eat in or near the palace for ease of meeting your guide for the afternoon tour. There are several cafés very close by.
